The Northeast Ohio Chapter of ACI invites you to join us on Thursday, March 28, 2024 in welcoming Mr. Jim Barnhart, P.E., retired ODOT engineer for his presentation “How Have Ohio DOT Bridge Conditions Changed in The Last 60 Years?"

Presentation Detail:

ODOT had No money for bridge replacement, he literally learned how to hold together bridges by whatever means possible!  The district had a lot of 100-year-old pin connected trusses with timber decking, narrow concrete girders, and concrete slab bridges.  In 1970, Jim moved to ODOT Central Office (Columbus) as the Structure Maintenance and Inspection Engineer.  All of a sudden, he was responsible for managing and overseeing 14,000 +/- bridges across the State!  Very scary!

Some notable bridge improvements during this period included:

  • Advent of epoxy coated re-steel
  • Bridge replacement program (slowly got rid of old pin connected trusses)
  • More durable concrete recipes
  • Use of hydro demolition to prepare concrete for deck overlays
  • Advent of concrete sealers
  • Overhaul of bridge painting specifications
  • Use of precast concrete box culverts
  • Use of prestressed concrete beams

Speaker Bio:

Mr. Jim Barnhart started working summers of 1965 as a Summer Intern in the ODOT Bowling Green District Office (District 2).  He worked as a construction inspector, mostly on I-75 and US 6 new bridge construction.   Jim graduated in 1968 from Indiana Institute of Technology (BSCE), and immediately was drafted into US Army (‘68 - ‘70); just missing Vietnam by a matter of days!   After the Army, Jim started in ODOT Chillicothe District Office (District 9) as the Assistant Bridge Engineer.

There will be 1.0 Continuing Professional Development Hour (CPD) offered for this presentation.
